The new Sea Rover by Dutch Design is a ground-breaking vessel meeting the needs of wellness-focused owners

Promising an unparalleled blend of thoughtful features typically reserved for 300-foot yachts in an innovative 140-foot design, the Sea Rover, a first for Dutch Design that’s limited to just 10 vessels, is the culmination of the vision of active yacht owner Scott Blum and award-winning Dutch yacht designer Bernd Weel. With wellness and lifestyle at the core of its design, the solid steel and aluminium vessel is the world’s only wellness-first yacht and boasts California-inspired minimalist interiors laced with wood, stone, earthen-toned textiles and other high-end natural materials that evoke tranquillity and understated elegance. With its long lines and clean surfaces creating a contemporary aesthetic with no superfluous details, the Sea Rover is defined by the singular line that sweeps aft from the vertical bow to the amidship arc and then curves back and downward to the stern. This simple but elegant shape allows for entire walls of floor-to-ceiling windows.

The Sea Rover was born from Blum’s search for a yacht that matched his desire for a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Having worked with Weel to build his previous yacht, he decided to build his own, one that tapped into his understanding of “Life at Sea.”

“I’ve seen firsthand the demand for a new lifestyle at sea, one that encourages activity and wellness,” says Blum. “Sea Rover is for the owner who likes to wake up and jump in the water; works out, goes diving and uses all the toys. It’s integrating travel with total well-being – something that has never been done before on a boat. For those who become owners, this is a tremendous investment that will hold its value over time.”

Sea Rover is designed around amenities that enhance the yachting experience for the active owner. For instance, the spa, gym and sports court (home to a pickleball court and basketball hoop) are on the bridge deck of the yacht rather than tucked away below. As a result, owners and their guests can have workouts, yoga sessions and spa experiences with a 360-degree view of the sea. The gym is outfitted with the finest equipment, while dual hot or cold plunge pools, a jacuzzi, a sauna, an infrared therapy wall and a dedicated massage area encourage relaxation and rejuvenation for total body wellness.

“Throughout the entire development process, which took over four years, Bernd and I were laser-focused on making a size-effective vessel that represents modern-day wellness,” says Blum. “As we set out to create the Sea Rover, we initially conceptualised the yacht to be 35 metres, then went on to 40 and 42 metres, until we finally landed on 42.5 as the right size to incorporate all of the important elements needed to make our vision come to life.”

An immense sports court doubles as a storage space for large toys, tenders and even a car, ensuring there’s never any lack of activities for guests to enjoy. In addition, a sizable beach club with 270-degree views features a dining table, sunbeds and foldable platforms on both sides of the vessel, creating an expansive swimming platform that spans the stern of the yacht. The beach club also holds a day head, wet bar and large cabinets for ample storage to hold additional water toys.

“There was no timeline when we were creating Sea Rover,” says Weel. “We looked at the details several times during the design process, and we made them better on each iteration. We really focused on what is valuable and needed on board to create a design that is super clean, classic, Dutch and will stand the test of time. We’ve condensed the grandeur of a 300-foot megayacht into something more intimate, without compromising on the features or the experience.”

Eating well is another primary focus onboard. A grand room merges the dining and entertaining spaces, with the galley and dining room positioned adjacent to one another on the main floor to encourage interaction between the chef, crew and guests. Large glass panels showcase panoramic views, so owners can savour their surroundings whilst enjoying their meals. Naturally, the galley is equipped with top-of-the-line Miele appliances and a Sub-Zero refrigerator, while the pantry is located next to the galley for easy crew or guest access.

A central staircase serves as the backbone of the design, running from the top deck through to the bottom. It starts with a cubed glass table on the sundeck, letting natural light flow into all the decks below. This in-house designed Sky View Stairwell is unique to Sea Rover and brings sunshine into what have traditionally been dark living spaces.

The full-beam owner’s cabin, located forward of the main deck, features large glass panels for expansive views and incorporates one of the largest closet areas in the industry as well as an extremely large bathing area that features a Japanese onsen-style tub and steam room. Four additional guest cabins contain ample storage space and direct access to the aft beach club via a truly innovative engine room passage, which illuminates and showcases the yacht’s powerplant, which is set behind glass on either side.

Blum and Weel also took the time to find new storage solutions, including dedicated luggage spaces that free up cabin space for guests and crew onboard.

A total of nine crew are accommodated in four double cabins, and one separate Captain’s cabin located behind the main bridge and at Blum’s request – as an important part of his philosophy as a yacht owner - each room is finished to the same premium standards as the guest cabins, with identical finishes, materials and door thickness to maintain the comfort and happiness of the team. The large crew area includes a laundry room, crew mess and eating area that caters to the entire crew at once.

Designed to encourage interaction with the captain, the wheelhouse is spacious and features a freestanding, state-of-the-art bridge console and two large couches to maximise panoramic views for guests. dutchdesign.com
